How many times have you stood in front of your very full wardrobe, exasperated you have nothing to wear? And how many times have you looked in the mirror wishing for a different body shape?
They are dilemmas Townsville certified image consultant and fashion stylist Jana Keane hears often. Yet is a predicament that has a solution.
Ms Keane is an expert at helping people find their style, boosting their confidence and self-esteem in the process.
She says no matter a woman’s size, all women can look fantastic if they are wearing clothing that is the right colour, cut and style for their figures.
The mother of three children aged between one and eight, has owned the business, Refine Your Style, for the past five years.
Ms Keane says she started her business with the intention to empower women by educating them on how to take control of their personal brand.
“I’m passionate about helping woman build confidence by taking control of their physical expression until their personal style becomes effortless,” she says. “Refine Your Style helps women realise, regain or refine a sense of their own style identity with a range of services.”
Ms Keane, who has a background in interior design, specialises in colour analysis, body shape analysis, wardrobe analysis and personal shopping.
“Getting the right outfit, the right look can translate to a more confident person,” she says.
“Any figure, any body shape, can look elegant and stylish with the right clothes.
“I have people say, ‘I will lose some weight and then go to a fashion stylist’.
“But I tell them they need to do it now, so they can feel good in what they have now. When they lose weight, the clothes can be taken in.
“It is about feeling great in the body you have, no matter the size.”
Ms Keane says a great figure won’t look amazing if garments are not suited to the person’s colouring and body shape.
“If you have a smaller body shape but put on a garment that is the wrong shape, you’ll look a size bigger,” she says. “If you have a garment that suits your body shape, no matter your size, it can make you look sensational.
“During a bodyshape analysis, I discuss with a client the line and design principles that best complement their body shape, and how to emphasise the best parts and play down other parts.”
One local mother who has transformed her look through the help of a professional stylist is Krystal Part.
The mother-of-four has been a stay-at-home mum for much of the past 12 years.
Her children are aged between four and 12, and Ms Part admitted she had fallen into a “rut” when it came to her wardrobe.
“I used to wear the mummy uniform, a pair of shorts and a shirt or whatever fell out of the wardrobe really,” she says. “But with my husband starting his own business, Modern Projects Solutions, I needed to join him at functions and at other business-related events. But after so long in my ‘mum uniform’, I didn’t know how to put together a stylish wardrobe myself.”
Ms Part says that her decision to consult a professional fashion stylist to overhaul her wardrobe and give her fashion advice was life-changing.
“Jana gave me a complete style overhaul, she educated me on where I should shop and what I should look for,” she says. “I now know what to look for that complements my shape and colouring.”
Ms Part says her style transformation was fast and effective.
“I was ready to make major changes to the way I dressed and the way I did my hair and make-up,” she says. “Jana gave me advice on everything.
“I love the way I feel now. I love a dramatic style.
“I have ditched the daggy shorts and shirts of my past, and now my casual mum look is smart and feminine.”
Ms Part says a personal stylist took the guess work out of how to overhaul a wardrobe.
“It actually saves a lot of money as a personal stylist gives advice on what colours suit and what style suits,” she says.
“An outfit becomes a well-worn one rather than an outfit that is worn once and then discarded because it never really suited in the first place.”
